UK Associate Medical Director

Pharma-Partners is working exclusively with a small global pharmaceutical business to hire a physician or pharmacist in to a newly-created Associate Medical Director position leading the UK medical affairs function. This business develops and markets products across three main therapy areas, and has a growth plan for global expansion through in-licensing and acquisition over the next 2-3 years. The UK will be a leading part of this expansion as a key European territory.

Working in a small UK operation, you will line manage an office and field-based medical affairs team and work closely with the UK Medical Director to champion the role of medical affairs within the business. This position will be busy from day one, and by way of working in a smaller set-up you can gain exposure to all parts of the company as well as build and own close relationships with both external and internal stakeholders. Beyond medical affairs you will also support decision-making for pharmacovigilance and regulatory affairs activities.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and implement a medical plan for all UK products in conjunction with MSLs and the corporate medical team
  • Provide medical affairs support and tactics for all marketed products in the UK (e.g. Advisory boards, congress activities, KOL development, investigator studies etc)
  • In collaboration with the General Manager and Sales & Marketing Manager, be responsible for defining and delivering market access strategy for all UK products
  • Line manage, lead and mentor a local affiliate team of MSLs, Medical Information, Quality & Compliance, and Clinical Training staff
  • Provide overall management of the Patient Support Service
  • Ensure all promotional staff are sufficiently trained in the relevant disease area, clinical trials, and products, to be able to appropriately promote products to HCPs
  • Design and deliver an on-going programme to ensure compliance with the ABPI code of practice and other relevant legislation
  • Act as an ABPI Final Medical Signatory
  • You will also oversee the following duties;
    • Pharmacovigilance - maintain a system to ensure all PV requirements are met
    • Quality & Regulatory - maintain the Quality Management system
    • Medical Information - maintain the Medical Information system
  • Actively contribute to the company's management team, as it builds and develops the organisation's strategy and culture

Requirements:

  • Qualified physician or pharmacist (therefore with full GMC or GPhC registration)
  • A physician will need to have significant post-qualification experience in clinical medicine in the NHS or equivalent
  • A pharmacist with need to have significant post-qualification experience in the NHS or retail setting
  • In-depth experience in medical affairs in the pharmaceutical industry is essential
  • For medical affairs physicians, it would be desirable to have someone who has completed or is soon to complete the Diploma in Pharmaceutical Medicine
  • An ABPI Final Medical Signatory (candidates close to achieving this can be considered)
  • Prior line management experience is highly desirable. Candidates with no or limited line management experience can still be considered if they can provide tangible examples of mentoring and developing others
  • Experience of Pharmacovigilance and Regulatory affairs is highly desirable
  • Ability to translate complex medical and scientific information in to digestible materials for commercially-driven colleagues
  • First rate communication skills i.e. being able to communicate effectively with people at different levels across different teams
